Vocations

Knights of Justice or Professed Knights of the Order of Malta take religious vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience. They dedicate themselves to the works of the Order and live the charism of defence of the Faith and care of the sick and the poor. This vocation is over 900 years old and one of the last lay (i.e. non-clerical) religious vocations for men in the Church.

Those who wish to aspire to the vocation of Professed Knight undertake a year of aspirancy. Upon successful completion of this year, the candidate becomes a Novice for a minimum of one year. Once the noviciate is completed and the candidate wishes to continue, a phase of yearly and triennial Simple Vows ensues for a maximum of 9 years. Finally, Solemn Vows are taken by the knight who commits himself to the Order in perpetuity.
